Meet the Candidate: Hailey Hernandez for SGA Vice President

Now halfway through the spring semester, the time to elect a new slate of officers to head the campus’ Student Government looms. In the upcoming election, the student population will have the opportunity to select a new executive board that will represent their interests and concerns.

In this interview, we sat down with Hailey Hernandez, who is running for the role of vice president.

1. How is your experience being a City College Student here at Wright?  

“I've been a student at Wright for two years now and honestly I've had such a great experience. My first year I was a little less social and knew very few people. This year, I was able to become more involved in the community here at school, like SGA and other clubs- which I'm so grateful for because Wright has such an inviting and resourceful environment!”

1. What inspired you to run for the position of SGA Vice President? 

“Through becoming a senator, I’ve grown more aware of the different issues that students face on a daily basis- ranging from small to large scale ones- and I really wanted to be an advocate for my fellow peers and help address or solve these issues to the best of my abilities.”

1. What are some of your priorities, if elected as Vice President? 

“I notice the increasing number of students who want to create a club, finding it overwhelming or feeling ill-equipped to run a club at Wright. I would like to make it more manageable for new clubs and existing clubs to flourish on campus through creating resources for club officers to increase success within their clubs.”

1. What are some advice that you have for students who are unsure about being involved in clubs and student government? 

“Being a student at Wright for two years now, I would tell students who are on the fence to GO FOR IT!! It is a great way to make connections that could help with your career goals. As a natural introvert, I know new experiences may be scary, but (not to sound corny) but you miss 100% of the chances you do not take.”

1. How do you feel about being the only candidate in the race for Vice President?

“I feel relief in being the only candidate running [for Vice President], but I can’t help but wonder about students that did not run despite being interested in the position at first. It’s definitely a bittersweet moment but I look forward to stepping into the role next semester! I’m excited to get to work for the student body”
