WAW hosts national taco day "Taco Tuesday"
SGA held its third event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in combination with National Taco Day Oct. 6 at Wright Around the World. Students played lotería for prizes as they ate tacos and churros while listening to Latin music.
Last week’s Wright Around the World event was “Churro and Crafts.” However, SGA was unable to secure churros from the vendor, and served tacos instead. However, this week students finally received the churros they were promised.
SGA Secretary William Flores provided insight into how the menu for these events are decided. Flores said, “We are currently under contract with Fooda, so we are limited in what we can serve. We try to stick with the theme, especially if we’re celebrating a holiday, but we also try to get advice from other students.”
lotería, the direct translation being “lottery,” is a traditional Mexican board game resembling the rules and formatting of bingo, except the bingo numbers are replaced with illustrations. SGA President Sophia Sanchez led the game by projecting the illustration of the card on screen while calling out the card name.

Five rounds were held, with students needing to get four across in the first and second round, four corners on the third round, an accelerated fourth round, and students needed an X shape on their lotería card for the final round.
When a student had a winning card, they needed to yell “Lotería!” and have their card checked before spinning a wheel to determine their prize.
If students missed out on winning in lotería, students were also able to enter a raffle for a chance to win a prize.
Lotería and raffle winners got to choose from high-ticket items, including a headset, a miniature fridge, sweatshirts, Lego sets, popsockets, tote bags, and squishies. Grand prize winner Michael Chiguil won a coveted Razer gaming headset.

Second-year student Nathaniel Vega, who attends Wright Around the World weekly, goes to these events for a myriad of reasons, but most values getting to know other students at Wright.. Vega said, “This isn’t my first time playing lotería, my family plays it too, it’s a Latino thing. I always come by to the Wright Around the World events and try to talk to somebody. You can get food anywhere, but I try to socialize with my peers here at Wright.”
The next event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is Gastronomy with Professor Gustavo, where students can sample Latin American dishes while learning the history behind each dish. This event will be held on Oct. 9 at 12:00pm in the cafeteria.
