Every day, Wright’s hallways are clean and safe, but have you ever wondered who is responsible for keeping them that way? Behind the machine that moves across the floors cleaning campus is Fredy Leon, whose love for Wright College is fundamental to maintaining the well-being of the community.
With 25 years working at Wright, Leon has dedicated a large part of his life to keeping the environment tidy and pleasant for everyone. “I enjoy my job, running the machine, and doing the best I can for Wright. I love my school,” Leon said proudly.
Recalling his first time operating the machine, he admits he did not know how to use it, but he learned very quickly. Over time, he not only mastered it with confidence but also began to enjoy the experience. “At first, I took it as a hobby,” Leon said. “But now I enjoy what I do.”
Throughout the years, Leon said he experienced many memorable moments on campus. He remembers that when he started working at Wright, his shift was at night, and he was frightened several times. Once, while he was working in the basement, he felt someone touch his shoulder; however, when he turned around, he said no one was there.
Before working at Wright, Leon worked in construction in Puerto Rico, his home country. But when he arrived in Chicago, his life changed. Leon explains that not everything is easy. The biggest challenge, he said, is dealing with disrespectful people at work but he affirms that his love for his job helps him overcome difficulties.
Leon added that he is grateful for his job and shared some advice: “You should always enjoy your work, because little by little your spirit becomes fulfilled,” Leon said. Although Leon’s work may go unnoticed by many students and professors, it is undoubtedly an important part of the campus.
Interview with Leon was originally conducted in Spanish.
