If you go to the cafeteria on Mondays at 2 p.m., you will see a sign that says “Open Studio”. Every Monday, the Wellness Centers hosts this open art studio event for any student interested in coming. On Monday they hosted “Kindness in Color: A Creative Self-Care Event.” Their planned activities were creating and decorating nails and creating and coloring kindness cards.
The event focused on art-making, self-care, relaxation, and community. They provided all the materials, but people are welcome to bring in any other material they would like to use. They also gave out Valentine's Day themed cupcakes.
“It’s not about the art you make but the space,” said Naimah Thomas, the co-facilitator and mastermind behind the Wellness Center events. “This is a space where you can explore, be creative, and not worry about something having to look good, but if it feels good. You don’t have to be perfect, perfect is not real," said Thomas.
When asked, “what do you hope students gain from the event,” Thomas answered that she hopes that students get a sense of community by coming to the open studio event. She shared that the Healthy Minds Survey revealed that a lot of students felt isolated.
“I forgot how I like socializing," said Emelyth Santillian, a third year student in her last semester. She stated that she came to this event because didn’t have anything else to do but did not want to go home just yet. She used to go to class, mind her own business, and leave but wanted to get back into going to the school's events and socializing. She rediscovered her interest in socializing with her peers by going to school events like this one. She had fun at this event as she has an interest in nails and does her own nails from time to time.
Jade Charles, who works with the Wellness Center shared details on an upcoming event. She is excited for the Wellness Centers March 9th Open Studio. The activity of this open studio will be decorating your own personal self care bingo card.
Charles describes the theme of this event is to make caring for yourself a little more interactive and fun. This open studio’s focus will be on decolonizing self-care and making self-care more accessible. Charles explains that it can be hard for students to find ways to get that self-care in.
