Wright College welcomed a new Newman Civic Fellow for the new academic year! This program is in many schools across the country and has been here at Wright since 2018.
The program strives to empower students who aim to positively impact their communities and is hosted by Campus Compact, a nonprofit organization started by the presidents of some of the most prestigious schools in the country in 1985 because they worried about the health and strength of the democracy in the U.S. and wanted to empower students to nurture and empower the people around them.
Every year faculty involved in the program at Wright accept applications from students and interview them. Earlier this year eight students applied and Jansa Hulett, a student studying math and international relations, was selected. The Newman Fellow receives a mini grant from the organization, national recognition, a mentor of their choice, training on skill development, professional learning and more.
The Newman Fellow hosts events throughout the school year related to their focus area. Hulett said in her personal statement on the Campus Compact website that she wants to host events that provide immigrants a sense of belonging.
Associate Dean of Instruction Gabe Estill insisted all the candidates were amazing and each one would have been a great choice, however Hulett stood out. Estill said that Hulett spoke with such passion, had so many plans, and was incredibly organized. He said it felt as if Hulett already had the position.
Hulett and Estill talked about the "deliberative dialogues” they have planned. These events will have students divided into groups and allow them to express their perspectives to each other with the goal of finding common ground and understanding each other’s perspectives.
The first event is in early October on media literacy, the second one will be November 6th about immigration, and the third about gender identity will be December 4th. Hulett has also created a Campus Compact club that meets every other Tuesday and their goal is to empower students to solve problems in their communities. The events and club are both non-partisan and open to all.
