Wright Holds Auditions for Batboy: The Musical

Inspired by a 1990s tabloid that claimed the discovery of a half bat and half child creature, Batboy: The Musical premiered on Broadway in 1997 and won the Lucille Lortel award for best musical, among other accolades.

Now, Wright College will be hosting auditions for a student production of the musical. A central theme of the musical is Batboy’s struggle for acceptance and inclusion while battling his own beast inside and the prejudice of the townsfolk.

Thomas Murdock, chair of the department of visual and performing arts, will be directing Wright’s production of the musical. Murdock saw Batboy when it first came out.

”I just thought it was a hoot, it was so much fun, and I always knew I wanted to direct it,” Murdock said. “This is also good for the younger audiences. I always like to do challenging and different things and this one will be challenging and different.”

Auditions will be held on Tuesday between 2:30 and 5 p.m. in the events building theater. Students are expected to prepare a monologue that is at least a minute long. Students must bring sheet music for one or two songs they sing for the audition. A sign-up sheet for auditions is located on the door of the box office in the events building.

Murdock emphasized the importance of preparation and overcoming fear for those considering auditioning. Murdock said, “Don’t be afraid, anxiety is fine, it just means you care, but don’t let it cripple you from not doing something.”
