SGA Presidential Candidates Share Goals in Debate

The Wright Times moderated its very first presidential debate in recent history between the SGA presidential student candidates Arcenio Rodriguez, Sofia Sanchez and William Flores on Thursday. A three way fight for one position, the debate was a chance for each candidate, passionate about various topics, to be able to speak out on what they would focus on during the 2026-2027 term.

The process went about giving every candidate up to 60 seconds to respond each question, the questions themselves compiled and moderated by Wright Times staffers Kyle Chmielowski and Adrijan Waraich and addressing a wide range of topics, from campus security, infrastructure improvements, and supporting student resources as just some examples.

All candidates spoke about opening up SGA more, making it a bigger and better place for students to be welcome as well as address any issues they have on the school premises.

Rodriguez spoke passionately about the safety of the student body, saying “Safety is paramount to learning.” He also mentioned how “SGA is a bridge” to students and for students in regards to collaboration with administration, while also giving an emphasis on emotional and physical safety for all students.

Flores especially pointed out that he would build a stronger connection with school administration under his presidency as well highlighting one goal that he wants to “establish a better connection with I.T.” Flores also wants to create a robust survey system for students to easily access if they have any issues.

Sanchez was very transparent in wanting to advocate more for undocumented students, pointing out her connections with the CCC’s only Director of Bilingual Learning Jocelyn Martinez, who advises the Dreamer's Club that Sanchez is president of. As well as providing a better and safer space for undocumented students to get an education Sanchez said she will be, “advocating for all students regardless of their status.”

Each presidential candidate wished for the student body to grow closer as a community with SGA, as well as with administration in the future. The vote ends this Friday. Students can vote by scanning the QR code found in the Wright Life emails. No matter the outcome the 2026-2027 school year will be led by a new SGA president. Anyone can watch a video of the debate, livestreamed on Facebook, here.
