Heads up: Strict ID enforcement rolls in July

Starting July 1, Wright Students will be required to visibly wear their student ID card  around their neck on campus due to a new security policy designed to improve safety.

According to Head of Security Grissella Limon, the requirement is not just at Wright , but a common policy at many colleges.

“This is something that every college does. It wasn't something I just made up,” Limon said. “It should have been put in place because of safety reasons.”

Limon also explained that “because we are an open college, as of right now anyone can just walk in. With this policy, if we know that you’re either an employee or a student, we won't question you.”

Limon’s main concern is to prevent violence. Limon elaborates with, “The first step is to get everyone to wear their IDs. There's going to be more put in place but this will be the first.”

Limon plans to have security at every entrance checking if ID cards are visible. Limon added, “If the campus community does not comply 3 times in a row, it will be addressed.”

Students who forget their IDs will still be able to enter campus after verification, “if you don't have it with you we will search you up,” limon said. “If you're found in the system, we will give you a guest sticker, and there's no problem.“

She added that students needing an ID card or replacement can visit the A-129 between 7am - 10 pm. There is a $10 charge.

Students also have opinions about the new requirement.

Jesly Chavez, a business and finance major entering her 3rd semester this fall, believes that the rule is fair, but she isn't convinced it will always be enforced.

“I feel like at first, yeah, they'll enforce it,” Chavez said. “But after a couple weeks it'll pass and they won't require it or be strict. People will just maybe show it in front and put it in their backpack.

Chavez pointed out the issue of remembering to bring ID cards, “Most people don't wear a lanyard, it just goes in their pocket or it's missing in their wallet."
