Wright College offers free access to the gym during certain hours, however, this wasn’t the case for the start of March as the gym doors were closed off starting March 2.
Throughout the week, students and faculty had made comments of a particular odor coming from the gymnasium, spreading across the entirety of the Events Building. It first started off strong at the beginning of the week before eventually becoming less noticeable and settling down in the building. Among those affected by the temporary gym closure were the clubs that regularly meet in the gym like the Pickleball Club.
“It was really bad on Monday, but now we can’t really smell it,” student Connor Timmerman said regarding the strange odor in the building when interviewed on March 4 .
“It didn’t really bother us,” student Norman Moore commented when asked about the odor in the building.
Gabriel Billings, the athletic director, made a response in regards to the closing of the gym. When asked about the reason for closing the gym Billings said that the gym floors were being resurfaced.
“It’s a polyurethane treatment, so yeah, that’s the smell that’s coming from it,” said Billings. "Nobody was really impacted, in athletics, we concluded our season last Saturday so we chose this week for that reason.”
The gym doors were reopened for all students on March 9.
