First Year Experience Hosts Videogame Tournament

Popular games, pizza, a little friendly competition along with prizes and a fun and chill atmosphere. What could be better after midterms? First Year Experience(FYE) hosted a videogame tournament on March 19 open to all students. The event itself brought engagement not only for the players in the tournament but also for others to watch and enjoy as well.

This is the second time FYE has decided to host this event, the first being in the fall semester of 2025, where they had such a large turnout that they decided to host it once more at the end of midterm season this semester. “Students expressed their desire last semester for more,” said  Victor Munoz, the director of First Year Experience.

The games people played in the tournament included Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart and NBA 2K, all popular games that many students enjoyed. The prizes for each winner of the tournament were a Funko Pop, won by Wesley Sharp, and a Lego Mario Kart set, won by Luis Alvarado.

Student Briana Chico said, “It felt really nice to play with other people.” Peer coordinator Natalie Morales provided her own consoles for all students to enjoy, and Munoz gave his credit to his team for their planning and engagement. Munoz also expressed that he enjoyed the idea of the event, describing it as “a way to connect students from different years together.”

Peer Mentor Ahmed Khan noted that the event was “fostering a better community,” and “providing a welcoming space for the students.” Other students like Arcenio Pfeifer said, “I like the community, it was really chill. The tournament was fun.” FYE looks forward to hosting this event once again next semester.
