A Glimpse into Wrights Talent Showcase

There are some extremely talented students attending Wright, and Wrights Talent Showcase hopes to give Wright's community a chance to appreciate them.

Before the show starts, the Wright Times caught up with a couple of the coming acts.

One of the acts in the 2023 Wrights Talent Showcase includes a self-taught guitarist, Jairo Altamirano, who will be playing with his band and also singing in a solo act.

Jairo started playing guitar 7 years ago, when he was 13 years old. Ever since he was a child, he always wanted to play in a rock band. And due to his friend having a guitar, Altamirano asked his father for a guitar every chance he got for years, which included his birthdays. Finally, on his 13th birthday, his father gifted him his first guitar, an acoustic.

By way of Youtube, Altamirano taught himself how to play.

“It’s hard in that you dont know what kind of videos to pick because there’s so much information on Youtube and it’s kind of disorganized”, said Atamiano, who added, “if you really want to do something you just keep practicing and practicing you’ll get it eventually”.

Altamirano has gravitated towards the Rock music genre due to the prevalence of guitar solos. His acts in the Wrights Talent Showcase will include him and his band performing the Spanish oldie song, "Te Quiero" by Jose Luis Peralesin, and a solo performance of a Spanish Blues song.

Despite only performing in the Wright Music Club and once in high school, Altamirano stated that once he started practicing with other musicians he got more comfortable with performing.

“It’s excitement that kind of pushes you and you start not to care too much about what happens you kind of just want to go for the experience”, said Altamirano.

Jairo and his band don’t officially have a name as yet. As of now, they can be called the Wright College Music Club, says Altamirano.

Another act that will be performing at the Wright Talent Showcase is Julia Carrozza, VP of the Wright Music Club, who will be playing piano.

Carrozza has been practicing piano on and off since she was 7 years old. She’s also self-taught. Not knowing how to read music, Carrozza learns songs by ear, which she says, allows for a great deal of freedom.

When learning the classical way, “it can only be a certain way”, says Carrozzo.

Carrozza was introduced to piano by her sister who had a piano stored in their basement. It all began for Corrazzo when her family brought the keyboard upstairs.

Carrozza will be performing the song "Time" by Hanz Zimmer, a song from the score in Inception.

The Wright Talent Showcase has a minimum of 13 acts in its lineup. The event will be held in the Events Building Theater on Thursday, April 27th, from 6-8 p.m.
