The Student Government Association Member's Experiences and Agendas

By: Wilfredo Razo

During the first three weeks of the Fall 2024 semester, The Student Government Association(SGA) hosted Taco Tuesdays and general SGA meetings at Wilbur Wright College.

Three new SGA officers, Natalie Romero, Hailey Hernandez, and Leonardo Gomez, discussed their experiences.

The new SGA President, Natalie Romero, found her time in the organization “a little stressful, trying to get acquainted with the schedules and all of the things that [SGA] has to do”.

Romero adds she is a “part of CAB [Club Advisory Board] and works for the events, so it is nice to see everything that [CAB] has organized and see senators helping out—it feels kind of  rewarding.” Romero thinks that “it can be a workload, but it’s like balancing everything out".

SGA’s new Vice President, Hailey Hernandez, said her experience “has been difficult". Hernandez stated “this is a new role for [her], and previously, was a senator. Now, with classes, [she] is more focused on science. [She] juggled her classes, SGA, and other clubs. Making sure that the clubs are up and running and that [SGA] properly supported them.”

The SGA’s new secretary, Leonardo Gomez, labeled his journey “interesting". Gomez commented, "It is certainly a different change of pace. There are a lot more responsibilities. I barely even went to the meetings because of the agenda. If you have a good planned schedule, it is not too bad".

Amal Zalloum, the SGA’s recurring treasurer, said, “We teach the new SGA folks how the process works. For example, Hailey as a first-time officer, hosted the Convocation Program for first-year students. She took charge and initiative. They are inspiring us and make us want to do better".

She adds, “Leonardo's adjustments make things better and organized and has the officers back. Natalie has grown into a more assertive person and she is leading us. Overall, I respect all the work that the officers are contributing to SGA and helping us grow as students".

SGA discontinued roundtables because of low student turnout and engagement. Hernandez mentioned, "the majority of people that would up to [SGA’s] roundtables, no matter how much advertising [SGA] did for it, would be five students and senators, which isn’t really helpful to [SGA’s] cause".

Hernandez added, “SGA is putting more of QR codes for student concerns because [SGA] wants to hear them, and it is unfair that you cannot express your concern because you cannot get to an SGA roundtable".

Otherwise, SGA will continue Taco Tuesdays. Romero discussed, “We now have Taco Tuesdays in a smaller space, and we will see how that goes. We hope that it is to the standards of our students.”
