Post-Election Discussion for Students to Express their Opinion

Nurtured in an environment of listening and respect for everyone’s opinion, on Wednesday, November 13, in room S-100 Newman Civic Fellow Tammatha Spivey hosted a post-election chat that provided students an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about the results of the 2024 election. 

Around 30 people attended the event, students shared how they felt about Donald Trump’s future presidency. Additionally, the importance of civil dialogue between people of differing opinions, and if they thought the results were surprising. 

Some students felt with many Kamala Harris signs all around the neighborhood, it was inevitable while others pointed out that the results were not as surprising.

 They pointed out that when the political bubbles people live in do not represent how the entire country voted, for example living in a blue city while living in a country that voted for Trump. At the post-election chat, students had a chance to share their insight on an election where people are feeling a range of different emotions. 

     First-year law student Aggy Estrada  says, ”I did go to the prior event before this but it was much smaller, it’s nice at this event to see more people because that just goes to show that more people are getting involved.” Estrada also says Wright College should host more events like this “where we teach people policies but are very bipartisan, not trying to turn anyone red on blue.”

Spivey highlighted why these events are necessary in the first place. Spivey says “Giving people this space to express their thoughts makes them feel supported. This event gives people a sense of comfort to ask questions. It’s one thing to hear a teacher tell you ‘you can do more for your community’, it’s another thing to be in an intimate conversation with a group of people and for people to tell each other that there are resources.”
