Dance lessons, Jeopardy, food and camaraderie were alive in the atrium on April 16 for Blossoming Beyond Borders, an event hosted by the Dreamer’s Club and SHPE, the Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers. Students entered a raffle and were given monarch butterfly pins and attendees had food options of wraps or pizza. When everyone was seated a game of Jeopardy started with categories such as “latinos in education,” “Wright trivia,” “Dreamers Club,” “SHPE,” and “fun trivia.” Each table had a flag from Central and South America and used them to answer and win prizes. Then, SHPE hosted Latin dance lessons after Jeopardy.
Sofia Sanchez, the President of Dreamers Club said, “In the springtime it is a tradition in Latin America to give your loved ones a yellow flower, which is what inspired this event.”
Regarding the event Sanchez said, “It was better than expected. It was a huge success for us because we are a brand new club.” On The future of Blossoming Beyond Borders Sanchez said, “We are hoping to do it every year like a signature event … I know we are mainly an engineering college so the support from SHPE is what brought a lot of people in … they agreed to continue doing this for the future.”
Sanchez said, “The support from students and faculty was amazing and I really appreciate it, and I hope that this is something we can do every year as an event … we want to continue to host a safe space for all students and build a community.”
